Café Madras, Matunga, Mumbai
They say, one thing leads to another; and the previous post about delicious South Indian food at Ratna Cafe leads to another post about delicious South Indian food in Mumbai…
So Café Madras;
Filled with wonderful memories, this quaint little restaurant located in the matunga suburb of Mumbai, is home to one of the most authentic and delicious South Indian fare in Mumbai; there isn’t a single time when a visit to this place hasn’t left a smile on your face or a feeling of happiness;
From leaving super early for work so that one can catch up with breakfast here before heading office to Sunday morning breakfasts here; where you’d be standing in a line even at 6:30 am; Café Madras is an all time favourite not only for me; but practically every person who I know!
From their dosas to idlis to filter coffee to ginger lemon to pineapple sheera; every single dish on the menu is an experience on its own! Today, I shall write about a few of my favourite dishes here!
Set Dosa
The Set Dosa is the first thing I always order at Café Madras. An all time favourite, there isn’t a single time that I have visited this place and not ordered Set Dosa.
A little thicker than a normal dosa and a little thinner than a normal uttapam, the set dosa is topped with a delicious red chutney and is served with regular coconut chutney and sambar.
Till a few years ago, the Set Dosa would come served placed one over another with the red chutney topped sides on the inside; now on, they serve it as shown below :

(Since all the dishes here are all time favourites, am just going about mentioning the names)
Onion Rava Masala (crisp)
Thin, yum, and super crisp, the onion rava masala dosa does nothing but assure you that you haven’t made a mistake by waking up early on a Sunday morning and heading café madras at 7 am for your breakfast.

Idli Vada
Another South Indian staple, the Idli Vada at this place is delicious and melt in the mouth. Unlike most places, one can gobble up as many idlis as you want without feeling heavy in your tummy.

So these are my top three all time favourites at Café Madras.
Other favourites include : Pongal, filter coffee, pineapple sheera, neer dosa, appam with stew, nai roast, pessarettu, rasam vada and ginger lemon.
